What is Laparoscopic Appendectomy Surgery?


Question: What do Harry Houdini, Elton John, Brigham Young, Kelly Clarkson all have in common?
Answer: They all had or needed an appendectomy surgery!


An Appendectomy Surgery, more commonly known as an appendix removal surgery, is performed when the appendix is infected and swelling usually caused by a blockage.

Symptoms include pain in the lower right abdomen and fever.

If the appendix is then not removed it can lead to a rupture of the appendix which can lead to painful death. The most common treatment of an infected, swelling, or ruptured appendix is appendectomy surgery.  To perform it using Laparoscopic techniques doctors only need tiny keyhole incisions. The first incision will be made next to the belly button with a tube called a Trocar, then Carbon Dioxide gas is pumped through the tube to “puff” up the abdomen to make it easier to see, then the surgeon inserts a laparoscope which is a thin tube with a tiny camera at the end of it to help guide the surgeon. The surgeon will then examine the appendix to make sure that it is red and swollen. If, after inspection, the appendix does need to be removed two additional ports will be made, through one of the ports the surgeon will put a instrument though the ports(hole) to grasp the appendix and through the other incision the surgeon will separate the appendix from the intestine, and close the end with staples. The appendix will be placed in a specimen bag and removed through one of the ports(holes). At the end the instruments will then be removed and the first incision will stay open to allow the gas to escape from the abdomen. The incisions will then be closed with sutures followed by skin glue or skin tape.

Common injuries when hiking and how to avoid them

Hiking has and continues to be one of my favorite activities during the Covid shutdowns. Right now I have been focusing on hiking the PCT, Pacific Crest Trail! I have hiked around 50 miles of the total 2,650 miles, starting from the US/Mexico border and going north.   Few structures of human anatomy are as unique as the hand can be divided into several different categories that includes joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Today we will talk about bones, tendons, and muscles.  Let's start with bones. The bones in your forearm are called the Ulna and Radius, those bones then connect to your wrist or Carpal bones, which connect to your Metacarpal bone of your palm and then your Phalanges or fingers. An interesting thing about the hand is that there are no muscles in your hand at all only tendons. The tendons in your hand connect to the muscles in your forearm, that is why when you wiggle your fingers your forearm moves because when the muscle flexes in your arm it pulls or releases the tendons and makes your finger move.
